Best Sony TVs 2020: budget, premium and smart

Sony Company is one of the best companies in the world, Sony makes some of the best TVs. While we will always recommend brand agnosticism, it is natural that you want to stick with what you know - if you are quite happy with your current Sony TV, then you may prefer to stick with the Japanese tech brand when it The time comes for a new set.

If you are, then you are in the right place. We have the best Sony TVs available between 49 and 65-inch, based on our extensive - and official - library of reviews.

Sony TV has it all, including 4K models that also use LCD and more modern OLED TV technology. There is also an 8K set if you are ready to take the leap. All of the TVs below support HDR. HDR means high dynamic range, and is a way of showing the difference between lighter and darker parts of the picture, which means a more detailed image. Sony's sets support many different HDR formats, including HLG, HDR10 and Dolby Vision, but not HDR10 +.

Most Sony TVs use the Android TV operating system. While the OS can be a bit sluggish at times, it is no doubt a feature. Just sign in using your Google account and you can also access everything on your TV, including the Google Play Store and Google Music.

The A8 is the best Sony OLED TV yet and stands out to rival any currently offered. The Sony KD-55A8 also combines the 2020 LG OLED panel with Sony's 2020 Picture and Sound Smart, and does so to excellent effect, making it the best Sony TV we've seen this year.

It is as thin as you'd expect from a state-of-the-art TV, although it's worth noting that the feet are located on the edge of the screen, so you'll also need a larger stand to accommodate it. You may not need a soundbar, however, as Sony uses actuators that visibly vibrate the screen slightly, essentially turning the display into a larger, flat speaker. A8 combines two of these actuators with two subwoofers.

You've got the usual array of streaming apps and technical features, including support for various HDR picture formats, including HDR 10 and Dolby Vision. But the real excitement is when you take in the picture and audio of this TV. A8 majors on realism and authenticity while providing detail and subtlety, without sacrificing punch and colors. Fast motion is handled with confidence. Throw in a good sound by flatscreen TV standards and you have a clear class-leader and one of Sony's best TVs. Best Sony TV to Buy Now? quite possibly.

This is Sony's latest and biggest TV - it aims to spread the visual nature of the stunning Master Series range to a wider audience. And it is also very successful. It is an LCD set with LED back lighting, but it is not able to do dark as well as a dedicated OLED tally. The motion processing is excellent, however, as is the overall viewing experience - a great level of detail, the colors really pop while the skin tone stays natural. It may not be right, but for this money, it is undoubtedly a great TV. We can say this.

4. Sony KD-65XF9005

This 65-inch tele may be a bit long in the tooth (this is the 2018 model), but it combines high-end features with a much more reasonable price point for devastating effect. The colors are bright and vibrant, while the skin tone remains calm and natural - a rare balancing act. The colors are porous and bright, while the set is also packed in impressive amounts. Motion processing is - usually for Sony - on point. The standard dynamic range for HDR is another in a long list of content upscaling highlights. Overall, great value that should be considered.

5. Sony KD-85ZG9

Sony's first 8K TV is a complete stunner.

You'll need a lot of room to accommodate its 85in frame, and deep pockets to meet its price, but you'll be rewarded appropriately if you can stretch it far. Even the incoming 4K content looks great, with Sony TV matching the best 4K models for sharpness, detail and motion handling.
The 85ZG95 also happens to be one of the best sounding sets we've also reviewed in recent months, with plenty of weight and body given to the movie soundtrack. The lack of content can make it difficult to justify 8K TV at this time. But, if you want to be at the cutting edge of TV resolution, then you need Sony TV in your life.

Sony's Master Series is designed to draw a picture close to the director's intent before any commercially available television. It enters Sony's LCD range, although it has direct LED backlighting onboard to help distribute darker black. It is a great TV, though the 4K picture quality is a bit softer than good. If you are upscaling from HD to HDR, you are ready to be treated with impressive behavior and detailed images. Throw in ultra-realistic colors and Sony's excellent motion processing, and you've got plenty of TV on your hands.

7. Sony KD-65AG9

It is a talented Sony TV, especially where sound quality is concerned.

Another set from Sony's high-end master series, the 65in AG9 is a gorgeous OLED TV, made on a pedestal stand with black bezels and melting the chassis in a dark room. It is blessed with the usual loss of HDMI (4) and USB (3) inputs and, like the vast majority of Sony sets, it also runs on Google's Android TV platform. Can cater to all your major smart services, including HDR 10, HLG and Dolby Vision HDR with Netflix and Amazon Video.

Sony takes a little time to look its best, but once settled, you are treated to a balanced picture, which is full of detail and is three dimensional. Motion processing is arguably the best-in-class as well. Some rivals show a brighter and punchier image on the set, and Sony is not the last word.

On the plus side, this model (and the 55in version) looks great for a flat screen TV, with a wide sound stage and a sense of focus and precision that you wouldn't normally get from such slim sets. There is impressive weight, but also enough room for breathing to interact.
